Je baby ademt mee!

De invloed van luchtvervuiling komt tegenwoordig vaak aan bod in de media. Dit heeft niet alleen nadelige gevolgen op de mens, maar ook op de zwangerschap. Een vroedvrouw dient hiervan op de hoogte te zijn om zwangeren gepast te kunnen begeleiden omtrent dit onderwerp.

We hebben ons verdiept in de bestaande literatuur en hebben een selectie gemaakt van de meest relevante artikels. Deze hebben we vervolgens samengevat.

Wat is luchtvervuiling?
Luchtvervuiling is enerzijds afkomstig van natuurlijke fenomenen (bv. bosbranden), anderzijds hebben menselijke activiteiten (bv. fabrieken) hier ook een grote invloed op. Het is moeilijk om te geloven dat iets wat je niet ziet zoveel schade kan aanbrengen. Luchtvervuiling bestaat namelijk uit hele kleine deeltjes, die zelfs zo klein zijn dat wanneer de zwangere inademt, deze de moederkoek passeren en de baby bereiken.

Wat zijn de gevolgen?
Er werd ondervonden dat luchtvervuiling zowel invloed heeft op de zwangerschap als op de zwangerschapsuitkomsten, zowel voor de moeder als voor het kind. Zo werd er een verhoogd risico gezien op zwangerschapsverlies en doodgeboorte bij een hoge blootstelling aan luchtvervuiling. Ook werd er onder andere een verhoogd risico op vroeggeboorte, laag geboortegewicht en ademhalingsproblemen bij de geboorte gezien.

Kunnen er maatregelen genomen worden om blootstelling te beperken?
Het is interessant om te weten dat luchtvervuiling invloed kan hebben op de zwangerschap. Zeker als je je bedenkt dat je de blootstelling hier aan (bijna) niet zelf in de hand hebt.

Blootstelling aan luchtvervuiling is dus onvermijdelijk, desondanks is het belangrijk om onnodige verhoogde blootstelling te beperken. Het is belangrijk dat vroedvrouwen op de hoogte zijn van de grote impact van luchtvervuiling op de zwangerschap. Op deze manier kunnen ze hun kennis delen met zwangere vrouwen en hun tips geven om de blootstelling te minimaliseren.

Een hoge blootstelling aan luchtvervuiling werd vooral gezien in grotere steden waar veel industrie en verkeer voorkomt. Een manier om de blootstelling aan luchtvervuiling te beperken kan zijn door die plaatsen zoveel mogelijk te vermijden.

Uit onderzoek blijkt dat het nemen van voorzorgsmaatregelen om de blootstelling aan luchtvervuiling te verminderen een daling van de risico’s met zich meebrengt.

Vraag dus zeker raad bij je vroedvrouw!
