Mentale veroorzaking: een filosofische brug tussen denken en doen. Het probleem van lichaam en geest is een vraagstuk dat al vele eeuwen oud is. Bijna allewereldreligies geloven immers in een ziel die blijft voortbestaan als ons lichaam sterft.Maar ook als je niet in een ziel gelooft, lijkt het of er een klein mannetje in ons hoofd zitom ons lichaam te besturen. We noemen dat mannetje dan niet langer ziel, maar‘geest’, of ‘bewustzijn’. Dat lichaam is maar een omhulsel, zeggen we. Die geest is wiewe echt zijn. Toch zijn de twee ook onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Je lichaambeweegt liefst alleen als je geest het wil, en je geest kan niet zonder je lichaam ergensheen gaan. Hoe dat precies allemaal werkt, wordt onderzocht door psychologen enbreinwetenschappers, maar ook door filosofen. Dat komt omdat de geest vandaag eeneven groot mysterie blijft als eeuwen geleden, zelfs al weten we steeds beter hoe onsbrein werkt.Niet iedereen denkt daar hetzelfde van: voor sommige wetenschappers en filosofen isde geest gewoon het brein en is er verder helemaal geen mysterie. Anderen geloven datde geest iets aparts is, maar hebben moeite om uit te leggen hoe die dan met hetlichaam kan samenwerken. Wat we doen, is immers het gevolg van wat we denken.Maar hoe kan een gedachte dan bijvoorbeeld onze voeten doen bewegen, als webesluiten ergens naartoe te gaan?Om dit probleem op te lossen, begrijpen we best heel goed wat we precies bedoelenmet ‘het gevolg zijn van’. Ook hierover bestaan als eeuwenlang verschillende theorieën,en raken filosofen het niet eens. Daardoor raken discussies wel eens hopeloos in de war.Als we dat willen vermijden, helpt het soms om een stapje terug te zetten tot we heteens zijn over elk puzzelstukje, voor we de rest van de puzzel te lijf gaan. Elk stukjewordt dan een werktuig dat we kunnen gebruiken om grotere problemen op te lossen.Zo komen we telkens dichter bij de oplossing van het grote mysterie van onszelf.
