Vlaamse jongeren die vroeg puberen gaan sneller beginnen met masturberen. De angst van de maatschappij in verband met de vervroeging van de puberteit blijkt buitensporig te zijn. Uit ons onderzoek blijkt namelijk dat jongeren vroeger beginnen met autonome aspecten van seksualiteit.
Lisa Devoogdt en nog enkele andere studenten aan de Universiteit van Gent onderzochten onder begeleiding van prof. Wim Beyers de seksuele carrière bij 295 Vlaamse jongeren, die de afgelopen drie jaar twee tot vier keer bevraagd werden. In ons onderzoek bestond de seksuele carrière uit een grote waaier van seksuele gedragingen, namelijk seksuele opwinding, masturberen, kus op de mond, tongkussen, voelen en strelen onder en boven de kleren, betasten van elkaars geslachtsdelen, aftrekken, vingeren, geslachtsgemeenschap, pijpen, beffen en anale seks. We splitsten al deze seksuele gedragingen op in zelfseks, niet-genitale seks en genitale seks.
In het algemeen blijkt dat jongeren die een vroege puberteitsontwikkeling doormaken ook meer bezig zijn met de ontwikkeling van hun seksualiteit. Ze zijn niet enkel bezig met de relationele seksualiteitsontwikkeling maar ook de meer autonome ontwikkeling die op zichzelf gericht is, namelijk de ervaring met zelfseks. We merkten op dat we geen rechtstreeks verband vonden tussen een vroege puberteitsontwikkeling en geslachtsgemeenschap, waar de maatschappij zo angstig om is. Daarnaast vonden we een klein verband tussen een vroege puberteitsontwikkeling en een algemene vroege start van de seksuele carrière. Uit vorig onderzoek blijkt dat er een grote fluctuatie bestaat in tijdsspanne tussen de eerste tongzoen van de jongeren en de laatste stap van de seksuele carrière. Bij een klein deel van de jongeren wordt de seksuele carrière doorlopen binnen één jaar terwijl vorig onderzoek vond dat bij het grootste deel van de jongeren dit gemiddeld in twee en een half jaar doorlopen werd. Er moet dus meer aandacht besteed worden aan het begin en vooral de evolutie van de seksuele carrière en niet blind gestaard worden op het einde hiervan, namelijk de geslachtsgemeenschap.
Jongeren die een vroege puberteitsontwikkeling doormaken hebben ook vaker het gevoel dat ze sneller puberaal ontwikkelen dan hun leeftijdsgenoten. In ons onderzoek bleek dat deze vergelijking met leeftijdsgenoten belangrijker was dan de vergelijking met de volledige populatie van Vlaamse jongeren. Veel onderzoeksvragen rond de seksualiteitsontwikkeling van jongeren beginnen namelijk met de vraag of jongeren in de algemene populatie vroeg of laat puberen. Maar toekomstig onderzoek zou zich meer moeten richten op deze perceptie van de jongeren en niet op de norm.
Verder vonden we dat jongeren die denken dat anderen hen aantrekkelijk vinden vroeger beginnen met zelfseks. Ook jongeren met meer permissieve seksuele attitudes, zoals “Ik wil graag seks hebben met veel verschillende mensen”, starten vroeger met zelfseks. Vooral bij jongens vonden we dat deze attitudes belangrijk waren, terwijl het bij meisjes vooral de puberteit zelf is die invloed heeft op de seksuele gedragingen. Naast deze verschillen vonden we nog enkele andere verschillen tussen jongens en meisjes. Zo bleek dat meisjes over het algemeen een vroegere seksuele carrière hebben dan jongens. Ook beleven jongens met een hoog seksueel zelfvertrouwen een vroegere eerste niet-genitale ervaring en een vroeger begin van de algemene seksuele carrière, maar dit geldt niet voor meisjes. Hieruit concluderen we dat eventuele interventiemethoden met deze verschillen tussen jongens en meisjes rekening moet houden.
In toekomstig onderzoek moet de nadruk worden gelegd op het feit dat jongeren zich vooral vergelijken met leeftijdsgenoten waarbij de normatieve meting minder belangrijk bleek. Verder is het belangrijk om de volledige seksuele carrière te bekijken en niet enkel de status van geslachtsgemeenschap. Ook zijn de attitudes en de verschillen tussen jongens en meisjes belangrijke variabelen. Dus ondanks de bezorgdheid vanuit de maatschappij zijn er mogelijkheden vanuit de psychologie om de effecten van de vervroegde puberteitsontwikkeling te bufferen.
