Impulsiviteit heeft in onze maatschappij maar al te vaak een negatieve connotatie. Uit een studie van Dickman (1990) blijkt dat impulsiviteit daarom beter opgesplitst wordt in zijn deelcomponenten, namelijk ‘Functionele Impulsiviteit’ en ‘Disfunctionele impulsiviteit’. ‘Functionele Impulsiviteit’ heeft eerder een positief effect op verschillende niveau’s van functioneren, ‘Disfunctionele Impulsiviteit’ eerder een negatief effect.
     Het doel van de studie die onderwerp uitmaakt van deze scriptie, is na te gaan in welke mate impulsiviteit, meer bepaald ‘Functionele Impulsiviteit’ en ‘Disfunctionele Impulsiviteit’ bij 18 tot 65 jarigen in een steekproef uit de algemene populatie in Vlaanderen (België), een effect heeft op (mal)adaptief functioneren. Zowel medestudenten als collega’s, familie, vrienden en kenissen werden via e-mail aangeschreven met de vraag aan het onderzoek deel te nemen. In totaal werden 342 bruikbare antwoordformulieren geretourneerd, waarvan 168 mannen en 174 vrouwen. De gemiddelde leeftijd is 41 jaar. Het onderzoek liep van 1 april 2009 tot 1 juni 2009.
     ‘Functionele Impulsiviteit’ en ‘Disfunctionele Impulsiviteit’ werden gemeten aan de hand van de ‘Dickman Impulsivity Inventory’ (DII) zelfrapportagelijst. Deze Amerikaanse vragenlijst werd door een team van de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven naar het Nederlands vertaald en gevalideerd (Claes, Vertommen & Braspenning, 2000). Het (mal)adaptief functioneren werd gemeten aan de hand van de ‘Severity Indices of Personality Problems’ (SIPP) zelfrapportagelijst. Deze vragenlijst omvat vijf betrouwbare, valide en efficiënte aanwijzingen voor kerncomponenten van (mal)adaptief persoonlijkheids-functioneren, meer bepaald: ‘Zelfbeheersing’, ‘Gemoedsgesteldheid’, ‘Relationele Bekwaamheid’, ‘Sociale Harmonie’ en ‘Verantwoordelijkheid’ (Verheul et al., 2008).

Resultaten.
De correlatie tussen de functionele en de disfunctionele impulsiviteitsschaal in de ‘Dickman Impulsivity Inventory’ is relatief laag. ‘Functionele Impulsiviteit’ wordt voor 27% verklaard en gaat gepaard met adaptief functioneren op vlakken van ‘Zelfbeheersing’ en ‘Verantwoordelijkheid’, maar maladaptief functioneren op vlak van ‘Gemoedsgesteldheid’. ‘Disfunctionele Impulsiviteit’ wordt voor 16% verklaard en gaat gepaard met maladaptief functioneren op vlak van ‘Relationele Bekwaamheid’.

Conclusie.
Uit dit onderzoek blijkt dat impulsiviteit een belangrijke impact heeft op het (mal)adaptief functioneren. Zowel ‘Functionele Impulsiviteit’ als ‘Disfunctionele Impulsiviteit’ vragen meer aandacht van onderzoekers, in klinische maar ook in een niet-klinische setting. Elke kennisvermeerdering kan een bijdrage leveren aan behandeling, preventie en vroegtijdige interventie. Daarom besluit dit verslag met aanbevelingen voor nader onderzoek.
Vooral preventief zou er meer aandacht moeten geschonken worden aan impulsiviteit. Zo zouden leerkrachten hun eerder impulsieve leerlingen beter moeten kunnen begeleiden in plaats van hen steeds te straffen of hen (tijdens de schooluren) extra begeleiding moeten kunnen aanbieden op vlakken van ‘Impulsiviteit’, ‘Zelfbeheersing’, ‘Verantwoordelijkheid’, ‘Gemoedsgesteldheid’ en ‘Relationele Bekwaamheid’. Hopelijk kan dit dan achteraf heel wat medicatie en therapie overbodig maken.
