Nieuwe ideeën voor het ‘oude’ conflict zijn hard nodig. Onderzoek die Israëlisch en Palestijns gebruik van het woord ‘vrede’ in politieke toespraken vergelijkt is vrijwel onbestaand. In mijn thesis kaart ik dit onderzoeks-gebrek aan door het taalgebruik van Israëlische en Palestijnse leiders aan de Verenigde Naties tussen 1988 en 2016 te vergelijken. De focus van het onderzoek is niet normatief maar pragmatisch: welk taalgebruik kan een brug vormen naar vrede?
Er blijkt geen hoop te zijn op een vreedzame oplossing van het Israëlisch-Palestijnse conflict. Althans, meer dan driekwart van de Joodse Israëli’s en meer dan de helft van de Arabische Israëli’s geloven niet dat de vredesonderhandelingen tussen Israëlische en Palestijnse leiders in de komende jaren tot vrede zullen leiden. Deze wanhoop versterkt absolute waarden die beide partijen nog verder uit elkaar drijft – zoals rechtvaardigheid, eerlijkheid en gelijkheid. De absolute waarden maken het voor beide partijen bijna onmogelijk om concessies te doen, risico’s te nemen of tot een compromis te komen.
Academische literatuur stelt dat het voortdurende conflict tussen de Israëli’s en Palestijnen voor een groot deel toegeschreven kan worden aan absolute waarden die socio-psychologische barrières vormen tegen een vreedzame oplossing van het conflict. Woorden als socio-psychologische barrières lijken wellicht zo onhandelbaar als het conflict zelf, maar simpel gezegd zorgen absolute waarden voor een (psychologische) muur waarachter vrede volledig verdwijnt en onzichtbaar wordt.
Waarom wordt die muur dan niet gewoon afgebroken?
Helaas is dit niet zo simpel...
Socio-psychologische barrières worden voortgebracht, ondersteund en versterkt door functionele maatschappelijke overtuigingen. Met functionele maatschappelijke overtuigingen wordt er niet meer bedoeld dan dat deze nodig zijn voor een samenleving die in conflict leeft om zich door langdurige ontbering en stressvolle situaties heen te slaan. Deze functionele maatschappelijke overtuigingen worden gedeeld door de mensen in de samenleving om betekenis te kunnen geven aan de wereld om hen heen en zichzelf. Vaak is de realiteit echter dat deze mensen in een situatie verkeren die voorbij begrip gaat en uitzichtloos lijkt te zijn. De overtuigingen hebben dus een belangrijke functie voor de samenleving in conflict, maar vormen tegelijkertijd een barrière tot een vreedzame oplossing.
Hoe bouw je een psychologische muur?
Door het woord ‘vrede’ te koppelen aan absolute waarden zoals eerlijke vrede of rechtvaardige vrede bouwt men bijvoorbeeld een psychologische muur. Rechtvaardige vrede suggereert dat vrede op zichzelf niet rechtvaardig is en dat er zoiets bestaat als onrechtvaardige vrede. Echter, onrechtvaardige vrede bestaat niet, vrede is immers per definitie rechtvaardig. Taalgebruik als ‘onrechtvaardige vrede’ vormt een barrière voor een vreedzame oplossing omdat men een vreedzame oplossing af kan wijzen door het als onrechtvaardig te bestempelen. Tegelijkertijd wordt dan de afwezigheid van vrede niet als onrechtvaardiger ervaren.
Vrede ondermijnende metaforen
Het is om deze reden dat bepaalde metaforen in combinatie met het woord ‘vrede’ als vrede ondermijnend beschouwd worden. Diverse analyses toonden reeds aan dat Israëlische leiders in hun toespraken dikwijls gebruik maken van vrede ondermijnende metaforen. Echter, metaforen kunnen ook gebruikt worden door rivalen om juist tot verzoening te komen. Metaforen vormen dan geen barrière tot vrede maar een brug.
Vrede ondersteunende metaforen
Het is natuurlijk niet zo dat het gebruik van metaforen bepaalt of een vreedzame oplossing tot stand komt of niet. Het tot stand komen van vrede is een zeer complex fenomeen waarbij veel verschillende factoren een invloed kunnen uitoefenen. Maar het is wel zo dat ons taalgebruik en de toepassing van metaforen niet enkel bepaald worden door de samenleving waarin we leven, maar dat taal en metafoor gebruik ook actief vormgeven aan de samenleving waarin we leven. Het is daarom van belang dat taalgebruik in overweging wordt genomen wanneer men factoren voor vrede onderzoekt.
Bestaand onderzoek
De analyse van taalgebruik met betrekking tot onderzoek naar vrede is een relatief nieuw onderzoeksveld. Desalniettemin is er reeds literatuur beschikbaar die de Israëlische zijde van het conflict onderzocht heeft door toespraken van Israëlische leiders te analyseren. Deze literatuur suggereert dat sommige vrede onderdrukkende metaforen typisch Israëlisch zijn en nauw verbonden zijn met de Israëlisch cultuur en geschiedenis.
Onderzoek die Israëlisch en Palestijns gebruik van het woord ‘vrede’ in politieke toespraken vergelijkt is vrijwel onbestaand. In mijn thesis kaart ik dit onderzoeks-gebrek aan door het taalgebruik van Israëlisch en Palestijnse leiders aan de Verenigde Naties tussen 1988 en 2016 te vergelijken.
Vrede als rode draad in de speeches
Mijn analyse toont aan dat bijna iedere zesde zin in de toespraken van Israëlische en Palestijnse leiders aan de Verenigde Naties het woord vrede bevat. Maar zoals eerder besproken, het gebruik van het woord vrede is niet altijd ondersteunend voor een vreedzame oplossing. Het woord vrede werd in de toespraken door de leiders dikwijls gekoppeld met woorden als rechtvaardigheid, veiligheid en vrijheid. In de literatuur worden rechtvaardige vrede en veiligheid en vrede beschouwd als typisch Israëlische koppelwoorden met vrede.
Mijn onderzoek toont dat zowel Israëlische als Palestijnse leiders vrede ondermijnende en ondersteunende metaforen gebruiken. Maar in tegenstelling tot reeds bestaande bevindingen, vrede ondermijnende koppelwoorden als rechtvaardige en veilige vrede werden werden bijna dubbel zo vaak of nog veel vaker gebruikt door de Palestijnse leiders. Dit suggereert dat deze koppelwoorden niet typisch Israëlisch zijn.
Vrede ondersteunende metaforen werden ook gevonden in mijn analyse. Palestijnse leiders spraken bijvoorbeeld over het bouwen van bruggen voor vrede tussen de beide partijen en Israëlische leiders pleitten voor het samenzitten en luisteren naar elkaar voor vrede.
Er is meer onderzoek nodig om de rol van metaforen in het vredesproces beter te begrijpen en wellicht deze kennis in te kunnen zetten om vredesprocessen te kunnen versnellen. Toch kunnen we al wel bewust pleiten voor vrede in plaats van onrechtvaardigheid!
